Harmony House
Author: Nic Sheff
Release Date: March 22, 2016
Publisher: HarperTeen
Rating: 1 Bird

Jen Noonan’s father thinks a move to Harmony House is the key to salvation, but to everyone who has lived there before, it is a portal to pure horror.

After Jen’s alcoholic mother’s death, her father cracked. He dragged Jen to this dilapidated old manor on the shore of New Jersey to “start their new lives”—but Harmony House is more than just a creepy old estate. It’s got a chilling past—and the more Jen discovers its secrets, the more the house awakens. Strange visions follow Jen wherever she goes, and her father’s already-fragile sanity disintegrates before her eyes. As the forces in the house join together to terrorize Jen, she must find a way to escape the past she didn’t know was haunting her—and the mysterious and terrible power she didn’t realize she had.

A classic horror story finds a terrifying home in Harmony House, drawing on favorite tropes and edgy, modern characters to create a chilling tale of blame, guilt, and ghostly revenge.

I picked up HARMONY HOUSE because the synopsis seemed amazing and the cover had a very Madeleine Roux vibe to it. Since I really enjoyed her Asylum series and this promised to be a creepy ride as well, I eagerly downloaded it.

Things start off with hopes of a good read. You get a very Casper  (the movie) feel when they get to Harmony House and with the dad being half cracked in the head already there’s also this The Shining feeling that filters in. Sadly though, things very quickly start to fall apart all over the place.

The characters are seriously underdeveloped and all seem to have personality disorders that cause them to go from perfectly happy to murderous rage in .0002 seconds. This isn’t just something the dad does, as his cheater is supposed to be off his rocker, this is every single person we meet. From Jen to boys she meets on the road – everyone. I felt like I had whiplash trying to keep up with the mood swings.

Behold The Bones
Beware The Wild #2
Author: Natalie C. Parker
Release Date: Februray 23, 2016
Publisher: HarperTeen
Rating: 4 Birds

Candace “Candy” Pickens has been obsessed with the swamp lore of her tiny Louisiana town for . . . forever. Name any ghostly swamp figure and Candy will recite the entire tale in a way that will curl your toes and send chills up your spine.

That doesn’t mean Candy’s a believer, however. Even though she and her friends entered the swamp at the start of summer and left it changed, Candy’s the only one who can’t see or feel the magical swamp Shine. She’s also the only one who can’t see the ghosts that have been showing up and spooking everyone in town ever since. So Candy concentrates on other things—real things. Like fighting with her mother and plotting her escape from her crazy town.

But ghosts aren’t the only newcomers in Sticks, Louisiana. The King family arrives like a hurricane: in a blur and unwanted—at least by Candy. Mr. King is intent on filming the rumored ghostly activity for his hit TV show, Local Haunts. And while Candy can’t ignore how attracted she is to eighteen-year-old Gage King and how much his sister, Nova, wants to be friends, she’s still suspicious of the King family.

As Candy tries to figure out why the Kings are really in town and why the swamp that had previously cast her aside now seems to be invading every crack in her logical, cynical mind, she stumbles across the one piece of swamp lore she didn’t know. It’s a tale that’s more truth than myth, and may have all the answers . . . and its roots are in Candy’s own family tree.

An awful lot can happen in a small town like Sticks, and if you don’t believe me then you need to pick up the Beware The Wild  series by Natalie C. Parker. With it’s southern Gothic vibe and tales of magic and ghosts, I promise you there is nothing like it in Young Adult right now – and you need it in your life.

BEHOLD THE BONES starts off as every great book should, with a bunch of people standing in a privates cemetery bordering a swamp almost everyone is scared of, discussing the family curse. Add in some Clary Moonshine and a heat that would make the Devil grab a fan and you have the beginning of a beautifully twisted tale.

{Book Review} What We Saw by Aaron Hartzler

What We Saw
Author: Aaron Hartzler
Release Date: Septemeber 22, 2015
Publisher: HarperTeen
Pages: 336
Rating: 4.5 Birds

Kate Weston can piece together most of the bash at John Doone’s house: shots with Stacey Stallard, Ben Cody taking her keys and getting her home early—the feeling that maybe he’s becoming more than just the guy she’s known since they were kids.

But when a picture of Stacey passed out over Aaron Deacon Mills’s shoulder appears online the next morning, Kate suspects she doesn’t have all the details. When Stacey levels charges against four of Kate’s classmates, the whole town erupts into controversy. Facts that can’t be ignored begin to surface, and every answer Kate finds leads back to the same question: Where was Ben when a terrible crime was committed?

This story—inspired by real events—from debut novelist Aaron Hartzler takes an unflinching look at silence as a form of complicity. It’s a book about the high stakes of speaking up, and the razor thin line between guilt and innocence that so often gets blurred, one hundred and forty characters at a time.

A raw and honest reminder that a snapshot isn’t always the full picture.

I think the thing that resonates with me most about this book is that it’s inspired by true events. So often we read contemporary novels about broken hearts, accidents, even deaths and think “That could really happen”  but you have this barrier of protection yet, because it was after all just a story.

With WHAT WE SAW that barrier thins out, the protection fades and you your forced to realize that this really did happen in some way and in this day and age, it likely happens more often than we even care to admit. I’m really glad that books like this are out there, so people can learn from them, possibly avoid the same mistakes, but more importantly have something that they can relate to if they ever find them self in a situation like this.

WHAT WE SAW is a poignant look at how quickly the space between right and wrong can fade, and how what you see on the surface isn’t always the truth. Lessons that everyone should remember, but often forgets as they quickly point the finger of guilt at the most likely suspect.

Asylum
Asylum #1
Author: Madeleine Roux
Release Date: August 20, 2013
Publisher: HarperTeen
Pages: 310
Rating: 4 Birds

Asylum is a thrilling and creepy photo-novel perfect for fans of the New York Times bestseller Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

For sixteen-year-old Dan Crawford, New Hampshire College Prep is more than a summer program—it's a lifeline. An outcast at his high school, Dan is excited to finally make some friends in his last summer before college. But when he arrives at the program, Dan learns that his dorm for the summer used to be a sanatorium, more commonly known as an asylum. And not just any asylum—a last resort for the criminally insane.

As Dan and his new friends, Abby and Jordan, explore the hidden recesses of their creepy summer home, they soon discover it's no coincidence that the three of them ended up here. Because the asylum holds the key to a terrifying past. And there are some secrets that refuse to stay buried.
Featuring found photos of unsettling history and real abandoned asylums and filled with chilling mystery and page-turning suspense, Madeleine Roux's teen debut, Asylum, is a horror story that treads the line between genius and insanity.

I actually picked this book up 8 months ago in the middle of a reading slump that would not go away. Some how it ended up getting pushed aside for all the things I HAD to read, so when I was able to pick it back up and read the rest I was thrilled.

Dan Crawford has had a rough life of foster homes. Now that he has found his "forever family" and is thinking about college, he heads off to New Hampshire College for a summer program. His main goal, is to make some new friends, to you know, just be normal for once. What he isn't expecting is what he finds in the depths of the dorm that he's staying in, because no one told them that the building used to be in insane asylum called Brookline.

Brookine's secrets are as deep and dark as what lies beneath it, and it hits home much too closely as he and his friends begin to unravel it's mysteries. Creepy photos, strange patient records and names that seem to be very familiar all stack the deck against Dan, Abby and Jordan – but none of them will go down with out a fight.

As the book came to an end, my first thought was THANK GOD I have the other books on hand ready to go , because Roux's writing is addicting. My second thought was something along the lines of this:

816073

The creepy photos that are scattered through out the book really add something truly AMAZING to this creepy and twisty tale. If you love a creepy good thriller that will keep you guessing and turning pages, then this is definitely the book for you! Be sure to stop in on Wednesday to see my review for SANCTUM (Asylum #2)!

Also, do you remember this beauty that HarperTeen made back in 2013 to help promote it's release? Creeped me out then, creeps me out now – and I love it!!

Ten Thousand Skies Above You
Firebird #2
Author: Claudia Gray
Release Date: November 3rd, 2015
Publisher: HarperTeen
Rating: 5 FIREbirds!

Ever since she used the Firebird, her parents' invention, to cross into alternate dimensions, Marguerite has caught the attention of enemies who will do anything to force her into helping them dominate the multiverse—even hurting the people she loves. She resists until her boyfriend, Paul, is attacked and his consciousness scattered across multiple dimensions.

Marguerite has no choice but to search for each splinter of Paul’s soul. The hunt sends her racing through a war-torn San Francisco, the criminal underworld of New York City, and a glittering Paris where another Marguerite hides a shocking secret. Each world brings Marguerite one step closer to rescuing Paul. But with each trial she faces, she begins to question the destiny she thought they shared.

The second book in the Firebird trilogy, Ten Thousand Skies Above Youfeatures Claudia Gray’s lush, romantic language and smart, exciting action, and will have readers clamoring for the next book.

You guys, I can't even with this cover. I mean look at it. It's beautiful. I want to hug the designer.

Okay, sorry I get a little crazy when it comes to awesome covers, let's get on to the review shall we?

The second book is literally a race against the clock. It is, if you can believe it, even more amazing and action-packed than the first book in the series A THOUSAND PIECES OF YOU! I flipped pages like a mad woman and had to force myself not to ship ahead, desperate to know what was next.  It's the kind of book that made me wish I was Dr. Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds, and could read at a lighting fast pace.

tumblr_n68st2TpOL1srrdjno3_250

We will visit worlds Marguerite has been to before, and ones she has not.  Each one is amazing and I can't help but wonder at the fun Claudia Gray must have had being able to reinvent her story's world over and over with each page written. It's clear that her imagination is infinite not to mention spectacular, as you will see for yourself as Marguerite tumbles through dimensions searching for the broken and scattered pieces of Paul's soul. Yes, you read that correctly – the boy is broken like Voldermort's Horcruxes. Be still my heart, that poor guy. If Marguerite doesn't find them in time, well I don't even want to think about a plane of existence where that happens.

Even though I was so excited to read, and wished to be on the next page every second, I was so upset when I the last page came. Much like you be upset to find out I'm not giving you any more info on the book because it will spoil the whole thing. If you've not yet stared this series, you have to do that – A THOUSAND PIECES of you was my favorite book of last year, and TEN THOUSAND SKIES ABOVE YOU is my most anticipated sequel release of 2015

Odea Donahue has been able to travel through people’s dreams since she was six years old. Her mother taught her the three rules of walking: Never interfere. Never be seen. Never walk the same person’s dream more than once. Dea has never questioned her mother, not about the rules, not about the clocks or the mirrors, not about moving from place to place to be one step ahead of the unseen monsters that Dea’s mother is certain are right behind them.
Then a mysterious new boy, Connor, comes to town and Dea finally starts to feel normal. As Connor breaks down the walls that she’s had up for so long, he gets closer to learning her secret. For the first time she wonders if that’s so bad. But when Dea breaks the rules, the boundary between worlds begins to deteriorate. How can she know what’s real and what’s not?

With a killer cover, and intriguing tag line it's more than disappointing to me that the rest of the book didn't live up to the hopes I had for it.

The new girl in town/outcast who has landed in small-town-USA has but only one friend who miraculously lives next door to her.  It's a single parent home, dad has never been around, is spoken about cryptically and is represented by only one single photo – when mentioned at all. Then,  a new, hot and burdened young man named Connor moves to town – (again) miraculously across the street from Odea – onto her rural country road with only 3 houses mind you. It's love at first sight, but they have to do the dance of teenagers and take forever to admit their feelings that are glaringly obvious. Of course. Odea must now use her dream walking ability to help mend a childhood trauma of Connor all why locating not just her dad who may or may not be dead, but rescue her mom from a place only she can reach.

The Good Girls
The Perfectionists #2
Author: Sara Shepard
Release Date: June 2, 2015
Publisher: HarperTeen
Rating: 3.5 Birds

From Sara Shepard, author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Pretty Little Liars series, comes the shocking sequel to The Perfectionists—with an ending you'll have to read to believe!
Mackenzie, Ava, Caitlin, Julie, and Parker have done some not-so-perfect things. Even though they all talked about killing rich bully Nolan Hotchkiss, they didn't actually go through with it. It's just a coincidence that Nolan died in exactly the way they planned . . . right? Except Nolan wasn't the only one they fantasized about killing. When someone else they named dies, the girls wonder if they're being framed. Or are they about to become the killer's next targets?

The thrilling conclusion to THE PERFECTIONISTS duology….or is it? I have to say that the last chapter leaves things both closed up and wide open. To be honest, it was totally unexpected for me – and I mean that in that I sincerely didn't see the killer coming from a mile a way and it was both AMAZING and TICKED ME OFF when it was revealed.

Part of me is sure that somewhere Sara Shepard is sitting upon her thrown of books, manically laughing at having thrown me for a loop and left me emotionally bet up after turning the last page.  But I'm just left wondering – is this all there is for THE PERFECTIONISTS or was just a way to leave people hanging on the off chance that the world will be revisited later, perhaps with a new series that focuses around the killer?

Clearly if you've read THE PERFECTIONISTS, it would be utterly ridiculous to not read THE GOOD GIRLS. It's necessary.  It's going to give you the answer of who dun'it – don't get me wrong you will be totally satisfied on that level.  I just don't know if this feels over for me yet, and that's not a bad thing. More books, I mean sign me up…I just don't like the idea that this ending was set up to NOT have anything more to follow it. I think that will make me angrier than Kim Kardashian not being able to take a selfie for 10 minutes.

About The Author

SaraShepardFor as long as she can remember, Sara Shepard has been writing. However, when she was young she also wanted to be a soap opera star, a designer for LEGO, a filmmaker, a claymation artist, a geneticist, and a fashion magazine editor when she grew up. She and her sister have been creating joint artistic and written projects for years, except they’re pretty sure they’re the only ones who find them funny.

She got her MFA at Brooklyn College and now lives outside Philadelphia, PA with her husband and dogs. Her first adult novel is called The Visibles/ All The Things We Didn’t Say.

Sara’s bestselling young adult series, Pretty Little Liars, is loosely based on her experiences growing up on Philadelphia’s Main Line…although luckily she never had any serious stalkers. The series has also inspired the ABC Family television series of the same name.

What if, after spending a lifetime deceiving everyone around you, you discovered the biggest lies were the ones you've told yourself?

Grace Fontaine has everything: beauty, money, confidence, and the perfect family.

But it’s all a lie.

Grace has been adopted into a family of thieves who con affluent people out of money, jewelry, art, and anything else of value. Grace has never had any difficulty pulling off a job, but when things start to go wrong on the Fontaines' biggest heist yet, Grace finds herself breaking more and more of the rules designed to keep her from getting caught...including the most important one of all: never fall for your mark.

Perfect for fans of Ally Carter, Cecily von Ziegesar, and Gail Carriger, this thrilling, high-stakes novel deftly explores the roles of identity and loyalty while offering a window into the world of the rich and fabulous.

Review

A heart-stopping and heart-breaking good time. Can something be both, well yes in this case it can. This was a fun crime story that leaves you guessing right up until the end, and then leaves you wanting more right away. Perfectly planned cons and precise verbiage make you wonder if maybe Michelle Zink isn't living a second life that she's writing about. ..

Your heart breaks for Grace, first in her back story and then in the new life she get's to "have in Hermosa Beach. Grace's family are con artists and she's been living a lie since they day they adopted her from foster care. With her brother Parker ready to break away from the life of crime and take her with so she can maybe have a real life, Grace is torn. Torn between the love she has for her new found friends, her adotive brother and even for the people she calls mom and dad.

My only complaint about LIES I TOLD was that it ended beyond abruptly. In a lot of ways I feel like I only got half a story, even though nothing about what came before that fated last page felt dragged out, like it was filling space. I can only hope that there is more coming, otherwise I might have another complaint... *wink*

**Review On It's Way!**

Romantic and action-packed, The Replaced is the gripping second installment in the Taking trilogy.

Kyra hasn't been the same since she returned from her mysterious five-year disappearance. Now, on the run from the NSA, Kyra is forced to hide out with others who, like her, have been Returned. Yet she is determined to find Tyler, the boy she loves who was also abducted—all because of her. When her group intercepts a message that Tyler might still be alive but is in the hands of a shadowy government organization that experiments on the Returned, Kyra knows it's a risk to go after him. What if it's a trap? And worse, what if the returned Tyler isn't the same boy she lost?

Perfect for fans of The Fifth Wave and the Body Finder series, The Replaced is both chilling and explosive, with creepy, otherworldly elements and twisty, psychological thrills that will have you questioning what exactly it means to be human.

When Stephen is forced to move back to the nowhere town where his father grew up, he’s already sure he’s not going to like it. Spencer, Michigan, is like a town straight out of a Hitchcock movie, with old-fashioned people who see things only in black-and-white. But things start looking up when Stephen meets the mysterious twins Cara and Devon. They’re total punks–hardly the kind of people Stephen’s dad wants him hanging out with–but they’re a breath of fresh air in this backward town. The only problem is, Cara and Devon don’t always get along, and as Stephen forms a friendship with the charismatic Devon and something more with the troubled Cara, he starts to feel like he’s getting caught in the middle of a conflict he doesn’t fully understand. And as Devon’s group of friends, who hang out in a cemetery they call The Playground, get up to increasingly reckless activities to pass the summer days, Stephen worries he may be in over his head.

Stephen’s fears prove well-founded when he learns of Spencer’s dark past. It seems the poor factory town has a history of “bad times,” and many of the town’s oldest residents attribute the bad times to creatures right out of an urban legend. The legend goes that the only way the town will prosper again is if someone makes a sacrifice to these nightmarish creatures. And while Stephen isn’t one to believe in old stories, it seems Devon and his gang might put a lot of faith in them. Maybe even enough to kill for them.
Now, Stephen has to decide what he believes, where his allegiances lie, and who will really be his friend in the end.

The Lost Boys with out vampires. This is how I explained the book to my husband when he asked what I was reading. I thoroughly enjoyed every one of the 288 pages, my only complaint was that this was Heather Brewer's first stand alone, which means that there will be no more tales around the bonfire at the Playground at night. What is there not to like – a small town with secrets, a pair of creepy and polar opposite twins, and a band of misfit boys who seem to live outside the law.

If you love twisty and dark tales that direct you down one path only to spit you out someone totally different – and that by the last page will leave you wondering if you really believe what you just read really happened, than I can't recommend this book to you enough. It's delicious psychological perfection.

It took me only a few hours to read THE CEMETERY BOYS but thankfully I have a whole lot of other books by Heather Brewer to read, you can be damn sure that not that I have had a taste of her wickedly brilliant mind and gift for story telling that I will be diving in head first to more!

Heather Brewer grew up on a diet of Twilight Zone and books by Stephen King. She chased them down with every drop of horror she could find—in books, movie theaters, on television. The most delicious parts of her banquet, however, she found lurking in the shadowed corners of her dark imagination. When she’s not writing books, she’s skittering down your wall and lurking underneath your bed. Heather doesn’t believe in happy endings . . . unless they involve blood. She lives in Missouri with her husband and two children.
