I'm so happy to be, not just apart of this tour – but hosting it here on MMSAI. I can no wait to see what's next in this series from A.M. Strickland – and hope that I continue to bring you all amazing MG novels to share with the younger ones in your life. Growing their love of reading as kids, will make all the difference in their world as they get older – read on about how I think this book fits into that!
About The Book
THE WAY OF THE WOMBAT: QUEST FOR GRAY IRONBARK
The Way Of The Wombat #1
Author: A.M. Strickland
Publisher: WhomBatz LLC
Which Way would you follow?
When Laz, a young wombat, goes from playing a game with his friend Kita in their idyllic tribal village to witnessing the nightmare of a Tasmanian devil attack, he reacts in the only way he can: he fights back. He accidentally kills a devil while trying to save his sister, but his sister is still taken captive. To make matters worse, the tribal elders banish Laz, Kita and Zeeg—the three youths who fought back—for failing to follow the way of the wombat.
Frustrated and adrift, the three friends embark on a quest through red rocky deserts and deep eucalyptus jungles to discover their own way. With a cheerful koala warrior as a guide and a wise platypus as their trainer, they hope to survive long enough to find a legendary weapon that could save their tribe and Laz’s sister from the devils. But danger lurks around every tree…
How fun! I don't typically read Middle Grades, and made it a point this year to do that more and more. I can't tell you how happy that I started here with A.M. Strickland's THE WAY OF THE WOMBAT: Quest For Gray Ironbark! It was so much fun!
TWOTW is jam packed with adventure, a fresh new setting and 100% relatable characters – yes, even though they are wombats! Middle Graders will love the near constant danger lurking around every bend, as the trio tries to rescue Laz's sister. And parents & teachers will love the underlying lessons built in like hidden treasures, of team-work, following the rules and friendship. I think that this would a fantastic book to get into the classrooms, especially with it being a series I can see this being one that kids really latch onto and want to be apart of for years to come!
I'm going to say that this book felt more geared toward boys. While I did enjoy it myself (and last time I checked I was in fact a girl) I can see this novel brining the reluctant male middle grade reader into the world of reading with confidence and a desire to read more . Will girls like it as well – well of course! I think this book has the ability to change how some kids look not just at reading, but also – wombats *wink*
Now, I know that I didn't give you too much book detail, I wanted to be careful not to give too much away – I always say it's harder for me to review a book I loved, than one I hated. I really just feel strongly about getting kids to read at a young age, and hope you'll think of THE WAY OF THE WOMBAT for your reluctant reader!!
