The Savages
(The Savages #1)
Author: Matt Whyman
Release Date: 3/6/2014
Publisher: Overlook Press
Pages: 288
Format: ARC
Rating: 5 Birds

They'd love to have you for dinner . . .
Sasha Savage is in love with Jack - a handsome, charming ... vegetarian. Which wouldn't be a problem if it weren't for the fact that Sasha's family are very much 'carnivorous'. Behind the family facade all is not as it seems. Sasha's father rules his clan with an iron fist and her mother's culinary skills are getting more adventurous by the day. When a too-curious private detective starts to dig for truths, the tight-knit family starts to unravel - as does their sinister taste in human beings . . .

Darkly delicious and repulsively funny!

Do not let the cartoon cover fool you, THE SAVAGES is a dark, twisted and creepy read. Just what the Young Adult genre needed! Need more than my word on that – check out the utterly amazing ARC label on the cover of the readers copy I received:

arcAdvanced Readers Copy. Not For Sale. You have been warned…

It’s not only perfect for this feel of the cover, with out having read it, it’s positively PERFECT once you read and learn all about little Ivan there…a psychopath in training if I ever met one.  But I’m getting ahead of myself here. Let’s back up a bit.

Laid out for you in courses, THE SAVAGES will take you deep into the world of cannibalism. Although, they don’t like that word, they don’t survive off of human flesh alone, it’s more of a treat several times a year. So if you want to stay breathing and not end up on their table, instead of at it, you’ll refrain from using the “C-Word”.

The multi-layered character development is a beautiful treat that enhances the moody undertone voice of the novel. Mother Angelica isn’t just a wiz in the kitchen, she’s also a shop-a-holic drowning in credit card debt she’s determined to pay off on her own. Ivan Savage, the middle child isn’t just the friendless prankster, he’s also chomping at the bit to jump feet first into the family tradition. Father Titus isn’t just the stone cold businessman that keeps the family running, but also surprisingly a kind  and family oriented father. And teenager Sasha isn’t just the eldest daughter, popular and dating the “It Guy” at school, she’s also venturing into vegetarianism. Only in the Savage family could this be the worst possible thing.

The best part of this macabre tale, is unlike what you might assume, it’s not a blood-fest, but a carefully plotted and spun tale of surviving in the present world with the taste for human flesh as well as all the other ups and downs of day to day life. Filled with dark humor and an unbelievable back story, THE SAVAGES will have you asking for seconds.

*Note – previously this review held a portion discussing the 9+ reading level listed on the ARC. This was a typo, and very much incorrect. The publisher is working to correct the issues as fast as possible. This book is geared at YA’s 14+.

{25 Things} Seth Fishman

25things

Hey everyone! Welcome back to 25 Things You Might Not Know About Me! This week we have author Seth Fishman, debut author of THE WELL’S END which I reviewed (and loved!). THE WELL’S END just celebrated it’s book birthday on the 25th, what better way to keep the party going than to have Seth on the blog!

Seth’s list was fun. For instance you’ll never guess what he lives in (#8) or why he wins all the limbo contests (#5). And as for #25 Seth, it is possible. As long as you remember that you need only be the perfect parent for your particular child and perfection is only achieved after you make some mistakes.

A deadly virus and an impossible discovery unite in one enthralling can’t-miss read...
Sixteen-year-old Mia Kish has always been afraid of the dark. After all, she’s baby Mia, the one who fell down a well. That was years ago, though the darkness still haunts her. But when her classmates and teachers at ritzy Westbrook Academy start dying of old age from a bizarre and frightening virus that ages its victims years in a matter of hours, Mia becomes haunted by a lot more than the dark. Their deaths are gruesome and Mia worries she and her friends may be next. In order to survive, Mia and her small crew must break quarantine and outrun armed soldiers in hazmat suits who shoot first and ask questions later.
And there’s only one place to go—the Cave, aka Fenton Electronics. Mia knows it’s somehow connected and hopes her dad, Director of Fenton Electronics, who has always been strangely secretive about his work, has the answers she needs, and more importantly a cure to save everyone before the whole town succumbs to the mysterious virus. Unfortunately, it’s not answers Mia discovers, but something far more treacherous and impossible than even the virus itself.
A high-stakes, fast-paced adventure with imagination and heart.
