Over the past 4 years HarperCollins has been a huge supporter of Me, My Shelf and I. It only makes sense that I bring them to you as part of my 4 year blogaversary celebration!

With us today is kick-butt publicist Stephanie Hoover, and she's not only got a great giveaway for you – but is going to answer some fun questions and show you around the new offices a bit!

Stephanie, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to chat with me! As a book blogger, it’s very exciting for me to be able to share you, your job and a little bit of the behind-the-scenes stuff at HarperCollins with my readers.

It’s my pleasure! I really appreciate all the enthusiasm you and the rest of the book blog community have for our books and love getting the opportunity to chat with you all.

As an Associate Publicist for HarperCollins, what’s a typical day like for you?

Every publicist’s day-to-day involves a lot of pitching, scheduling, and generally talking up books we’re obsessed with. In addition to this, I handle the digital side of things for the department, which means I get to fangirl with bloggers all day, so I pretty much hit the jackpot.

What’s something about your job, that the readers might be surprised to know?

Every book and author is different, and so every publicity campaign is very different, too. Readers might be surprised to know how often my amazing co-workers and I are putting our heads together to brainstorm new ways to get every book we love the attention they deserve.

photoI know a lot of people, my 10 year-old included, who would love to have your job someday (don’t worry – no one’s gunning for it! You’re safe!) Can you tell us what kind of schooling or experience you needed in order to land such an exciting job?
Intern, intern, intern!

Seriously. Everyone I’ve met in publishing had a different path to lead them here, but almost all begin with an internship. Personally, I spent a couple of years at a literary agency after an internship, and then found my true love – publicizing children’s books!

Help a Blogger out, let’s talk ARC’s. All publishers have different ways they like things to be requested and criteria they like bloggers to meet in order to request – what should bloggers know before requesting from Harper?

I am the main point of contact for bloggers and am always happy to help you with any galley requests you might have. We also offer a ton of titles on Edelweiss, so you can request digital review copies there as well! We don’t have a physical catalogue, but you can find our digital catalogue on Edelweiss here (http://edelweiss.abovethetreeline.com/HomePage.aspx?pubOrgID=HC) where you can see all of our exciting new titles!

Now let us help you, how can we make the requesting process easier on your end?
My favorite thing is reading an email from a blogger telling me why they’re so excited about a book we have coming out. I usually am too, and it makes my day! It’s also great to see a link to your blog and social media pages at the bottom of the request email, as well as your most recent stats if you have them handy. I like to get an idea of what type of books you’re into so I can keep you in mind for future releases!

imageHarperCollins recently moved to a new office space, how exciting! What can you tell us about the new digs? Do you have any favorite spots? (can you share a photo or two of your favorite spots in the office?)
The new space is absolutely incredible. Display cases line the walls telling the story of HarperCollins’s history and feature iconic books that we’ve published through the years. My favorite spots are probably the gorgeous main stairwell and the café on the top floor – critical when I need a sugar fix J

When you’re not at work what are 4 things we might find you doing?
Reading (occasionally even adult books!), listening to the podcast Serial, watching Downton Abbey, and making progress on my mission to sample every burger joint in New York City.

What are your 4 favorite books?
Oh, gosh – you know that’s such a hard question! Right now, I would say The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein, The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, The Secret History by Donna Tartt, and Vanishing Girls by Lauren Oliver – not officially out until March, so that might be a bit of a cheat!

Favorite moment so far, working at HarperCollins?
Every time I see an amazing review for a book I’ve worked on – whether it’s from a huge national publication or a blogger who is just starting out. It’s the best feeling in the world.

Thank you so much for letting the readers get to you know and your job and for taking time to help MMSAI celebrate our 4 year blog-aversary!
Thank you, Amber – working with you and other book bloggers is one of the best parts of my job and I’m excited to continue that!
