Just in time for the holidays, I was offered a great movie and book bundle for review. Now, I'm a sucker for holiday movies, everything from A CHRISTMAS STORY to whatever sappy Lifetime movie might be showing at the moment. So when ANGEL'S SING came to me, I was all in!
It's hard to not be excited about a move that debuted at the SXSW (that's South By Southwest) Music Festival because it's got so many brilliant musicians in it, Willie Nelson, Harry Connick Jr. and Lyle Lovett. Or to not get all giddy when you find out the movie is based off a book written by Turk Pipkin, which to me makes it even more special – books to movies. LOVE IT!
Now I will admit that I have not yet had time to read the book with the flu taking over this house earlier this week, but the movie was great! Better than great, it's been added to our holiday wheelhouse of movies! It was funny, and heartwarming, and a bit sad at times. Promptly when it was over I told my husband I wanted 3 light-up reindeer for my front yard to name Burp, Snort and Poot. And I will start sining the 12 Days of Christmas as the family in the movie does, making it up as they go along. I loved it, and so did my husband which is saying something because he's kinda set on his Holiday Trifecta of movies, and that's what he sticks to.

Thank you so much for being here today Turk!
Thanks for your interest in the book and the movie!
What was the one part of the book you looked most forward to seeing brought to life in the movie?I really like the interactions between Harry Connick, Jr. (as Michael Walker) and Willie Nelson (as Nick). Their core being seem to be so different but in fact they are quite a bit alike. Both the characters and the acting are faves for me.
The cast assembled for the movie is extraordinary, Harry Connick Jr., Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett and many more, what was it like for you when you learned of the casting choices?
Other than playing a part in the film, my main contribution on the film was creative input and casting introductions to friends I’d worked with on other projects. I'd always wanted Willie Nelson to play the role of Nick, a mysterious man who may or may not be St. Nick. Likewise for Kris Kristofferson to play the grandfather. I’d worked with Connie Britton on Friday Night Lights. Lyle Lovett was my opening act when he was still in college at Texas A & M. And I’d worked with Eloise Dejoria through our two foundations - The Nobelity Project and the Peace Love and Happiness Foundation. So I guess i’m the luckiest novelist ever - I got the cast I wanted.
WHEN ANGELS SING was published back in 1999, what sparked the idea for it?
I had two young daughters and wanted to write a Christmas story for them and for all my family. So the first edition of When Angels Sing was 50 hand-bound copies that I gave as Christmas presents for my family and close friends. I had thought a lot about the connections between family and Christmas traditions, and was well aware of the mixed emotions many people have about the Christmas holiday.
Readers might notice that you write both non-fiction and fiction, do you have a preference between them when it comes to the writing process?I’ve published a dozen books - my favorite generally depends on which one some reader talked to me about most recently. But I am very fond of my novels When Angels Sing, Fast Greens, and an new novel that hasn’t been published yet - All For Love - which is also on track to be a movie, and I think is the best thing I’ve written.
What, if anything are you working on now?I’m working with TPSC Films in Hollywood to make All For Love - my novel and my screenplay this time - and am looking for just the right publisher. Much of my time is spent on my work for The Nobelity Project - building schools and water systems in Kenya, and filming all over the world for our feature and short films about global problems and solutions. There’s lots of info about our current projects on our site at www.nobelity.org

About The Movie
Harry Connick, Jr. stars as Michael Walker, who, as a child, wished every day was Christmas. That is, until a tragic accident crushed his holiday spirit. Thirty years later, Michael still can’t muster any joy for Christmas, despite encouragement from his playful wife (Connie Britton) and well intentioned parents (Kris Kristofferson and Fionnula Flanagan). But when his young son (Chandler Canterbury) faces a tragedy, Michael needs to make amends with his past. A mysterious man named Nick (Willie Nelson) gives Michael a gift that instills in him the courage to find the Christmas joy that he lost.
