Two jumped off the pier that night...but only one came back alive
Bryn did everything with her best friend Erica. So when someone dared Erica to jump off the pier one night at Harding Beach, Bryn was right by her side. But when Bryn made it back to the surface, Erica was nowhere to be found. Bryn tries to make a fresh start by burying her memories of that awful night. But when a Twitter post from "EricaNShaw" pops up on her feed and a chilling voice mail appears on her phone, she realizes that someone isn't ready to let go of the past...

Exactly what you would expect from author Hannah Jayne. Mystery/Thriller with some psychological undertones.

This is both good and bad for me. Let me explain:

When I say exactly what you would expect, I mean simply that even the town, the high school and the mostly empty housing development they all live in are all the same through all three of her young adult books published with Sourcebooks Fire. It should be noted that these three novels are not part of a series. Every protagonist moves to the weirdly empty housing development on the outskirts of town. Two of the three are the new kid in town, and it has me wondering – how far will this go? Will we continue on this road until the whole development is filled with damaged, stressed survivors of horrible circumstances?

Now, don't get me wrong, the world is strong and creepily real. It's more than great in fact. Jayne's writing style is fluid and intriguing and has just enough happening at all times to keep you inching to the edge of your seat, second guessing yourself when you think you know who done it.

I will admit it took me a bit longer to sort out who done it in THE DARE than it did in any of the other books, I kept second guessing myself. Sadly when it was revealed who the villain was, honestly I was disappointed. It felt so familiar. Wrapping up I have to say that while the book was enough to keep me entertained, and a good ol thriller to keep you guessing, I urge you to start with one of her other YA novels TRULY MADLY DEADLY or SEE JANE RUN which were both much stronger concepts in my opinion.

Do note, there are no spoilers to any of the other books in the first two YA's she wrote, but a brief conversation about the past circumstances in town between Bryn and a friend in THE DARE will give away things to the first two books if you read it first. You've been warned…
