I still love Cole. I will always love to hate Isabel. I will always love Mercy Falls and where ever it's inhabitants travel to. And I will always love Steifvater. I just didn't love SINNER, I liked it.

Sinner
Wolves of Mercy Falls #3.5
Author: Maggie Siefvater
Publisher: Scholastic
Release Date: July 1, 2014
Rating: 3.5 Birds

A standalone companion book to the internationally bestselling Shiver Trilogy.
Sinner follows Cole St. Clair, a pivotal character from the #1 New York Times bestselling Shiver Trilogy. Everybody thinks they know Cole's story. Stardom. Addiction. Downfall. Disappearance. But only a few people know Cole's darkest secret -- his ability to shift into a wolf. One of these people is Isabel. At one point, they may have even loved each other. But that feels like a lifetime ago. Now Cole is back. Back in the spotlight. Back in the danger zone. Back in Isabel's life. Can this sinner be saved?

This review will definitely have spoilers from books 1-3 in it. If you have not read those 3 books, read at your own risk.

The announcement that we would have an entire book on Cole St. Clair sent shivers (get it…SHIVERs? *groan* bad pun…I know) of the most rabid fan girl fashion through me. I couldn't wait. A stand alone addition to one of my favorite series ever. All about my favorite character, Cole St Clair.

When Cole died (but didn't really die), in FOREVER ripped my heart out and made me want to throw my copy so hard it would explode into millions of pieces. Without Cole, I didn't want to go on. Without Cole I didn't care about the rest of that book, who lived, who died…I just wanted Cole. All the time – Cole. Cole. Cole.

I got all Cole, all the time in SINNER. It should have been a dream come true for me but I have to admit that after turning the last page, as much as it pains me to write anything less than: OMFG I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH! READ IT NOW! *chucks a book at your head* – honesty is my policy here on MMSAI. So be it painful or not…here is my honest review.

While SINNER is beautifully written in that glorious Stiefvater-style, you know that manner in which she writes that makes you realize she could write out VCR instructions and you would be captivated….truth is, I was a little bored with Cole, and a little (more than normal) annoyed with Isabel in SINNER.

My heart just stuttered as I wrote that.

I've been sitting here wondering if maybe I built it up too much in my head? We've all done that before over something or another. Or maybe it had been so long since I last visited Mercy Falls that I had forgotten the true nature of Cole. There has to be a reason for this because..well there just did.

What it all comes down to is SINNER, in my opinion, lacked the heart-stopping action and suspenseful intrigue that all the other books in the Mercy Falls series had. While I am aware this is the story of the beginning of Cole and Isabel, and that high-stakes-life-or-death kinds of situations don't pop up a lot in a love story about two self-involved kids from privileged backgrounds. I did feel there could have been a little more suspense and even stress to the reader during this somewhat tortured love story.

I still love Cole. I will always love to hate Isabel. I will always love Mercy Falls and where ever it's inhabitants travel to. And I will always love Steifvater. I just didn't love SINNER, I liked it.

  1. I LOVE Maggie Stiefvater! Sorry this one wasn't as fantastic as the others in the series. I can't wait to get started on it!
