The Field by Tracy Richardson
Release Date: October 1st, 2013 | Publisher: Luminis Books
Rating: 3.5 Birds

Eric Horton has been having disturbing nightmares of explosions and fire and someone screaming. The dreams keep him up at night, but during the day, as a goalkeeper on his high school’s varsity soccer team, he has been unbeatable, saving shot after shot with what feels like a supernatural awareness of where the ball is headed. He also shares an uncommonly strong connection with Renee, the attractive new French exchange student. The wild visions and synchronicities pale in comparison to the strange experiments Renee’s father is carrying out in the physics lab at the university, however. He has asked Eric to take part in the tests, which makes Eric question whether what he is seeing and hearing is reality or something far beyond it. When his friend Will develops a drinking problem and Renee starts flirting with other guys, Eric loses his confidence on the soccer field and in himself. If he is going to pull it all together, he will have to tap into a part of himself that he never knew existed.

THE FILED was an interesting, science fiction meets supernatural coming-of-age story about high school student Eric Horton. Eric's just made the soccer team, as the goalie and he's got an unbelievable ability to just know where the ball is going to go. Needless to say this makes him a pretty darn good goalie, as you might imagine.

Eric has never really thought that his abilities on the field were more than just great reflexes, until he meets a scientist who has some different theories.

The simple fact that THE FIELD was totally different than anything else I have ever read is a huge plus for me. In fact as I sat here trying to add the tags to the review, I didn't even know what to label it as. Sci-Fi, yep a little. Romance? Okay there's a little. Coming-of-age? Sure, of course. Supernatural? It's even go that! IYou might think that a story with this much going on would tough to read, but Richardson really has a knack for blending it all together and making you feel like this hybrid genre she's created has been done a million times before.

My main trouble spot with the book was simply the science portion. I didn't enjoy it in school and I tend to not enjoy out of it either. At times it felt like info dumping, which you all know I frown upon from previous reviews. I don't really think there would have been any other way for Richardson to get the information out there in a timely manner, and with out the information the story would not have held up as well. I simply have a difficult time processing it

Praise for THE FIELD

“Readers will appreciate the fast-paced, compelling drama. A good choice for people who hope there’s more to space than space”. ~ Kirkus Reviews

A combination of the real world of soccer and the mystical world of the Universal Energy Field. This is a very imaginative novel. ~ Bookviews by Alan Caruba
