Last Movie Monday I talked about books that became movies before I even knew they were books. This week let’s take a look at what’s coming to the big screen from the page. Some you’ll know, some you may already have tickets for in fact…others are just starting production and might surprise you!

In no particular order, just to keep it interesting (I’m weird like that)….

The Maze Runner

With a slight set back in release, James Dashner assures us it’s for the best. Hey, when the studio throws more money at you to make even better that it already was, you don’t argue! I don’t know about you, but this is my most anticipated movie of 2014 and I can barely contain myself waiting for it.  I might have a wee crush on Dylan O’Brien that doesn’t help the anticipation…and by wee, I mean HUGE (of course!)

STATUS: Pre-Production

The IMDb page was updated on the 14th of February, but we all know how that can sometimes be wrong. Regardless, everyone’s favorite childhood creep-fest books are coming to the big screen and if the page is to be believed, looks like Jack Black will be apart of things! Awesome!!

STATUS: Hits theaters June 6, 2014

Unless you’ve been hiding under some rock, or just go out of your way to avoid amazing books – you know that TFioS is hitting the big screen. With Ansel Elgort playing Gus and Shailene Woodley playing Hazel, this is bound to be the movie adaptation of a life time. Author John Green, as apparent by his Instagram and various other social media outlets, has had quite a bit to do with the movie and assures us we will love it. And when have we ever not been able to trust John Green?  IMDb

STATUS: Precise status is unknown

It’s Neil Gaiman – who need solid answers as long as we know this could be happening? Am I right? Okay so solid answers wouldn't hurt. According to the IMDb page, Ron Howard (!!!) is set to direct and that makes me extra happy! There is no cast or even production status listed but we’ll let you know if we see that change!

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

STATUS: In Production

According to Hypable, not only is this fan favorite book coming to the big screen with all it’s creepy goodness – Tim Burton is slated to direct. I’m pretty sure that the universe is going to collapse in on itself with the amount of amazing just in this tiny paragraph!

With a release date listed simply as 2015 on the IMDb page, I know we are all waiting on bated breath for the first hint of casting + movie stills!

STATUS: In Development

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been tied to this big screen adaptation of the comic book series by Neil Gaimen. This is just another awesome combo of people that I can’t contain my excitement about. I would expect that this would be a 2015 or 2016 release, so while we’re all very excited, we’ve got a big wait in front of us!

STATUS: In Development

The first book in the popular Lani Taylor series may not have a release date, but it does have a director: Michael Gracey and a screenwriter: Stuart Beattie. This is great news for fans of this amazing fantasy series – too often we find movie rights to our favorite books have been bought, but then no forward movement is made and things stall out.

STATUS: In Theaters March 21st 2014

This is another of those you already know about and likely have your tickets to.  I have to admit I was a bit worried about the casting of Shailene Woodly as Tris, at first. To date all I really knew her from was Secret Life of an American Teenager and I never felt she was all that great in it. After the trailers, I’m down and fully support her role. Also Theo James…YUM! Loved him in Bedlam (UK)

STATUS: In Development

I know, this is mainly a YA kind of blog – but when I see that one of my FAVORITE books to movies of all times, is being remade, I can’t just not mention it. Now I’m not super thrilled about this, I’m of the mind set of “leave well enough alone” but I am curious to see how they do things now. This movie scared the crap out of me, and I still can’t sleep with my feet hanging out of the covers because of it. We’ll have to hold tight and hope they do it justice.

STATUS: In Development

It’s said that director Harvey Weinstein will be joining forces with Walt Disney Studios to make this a live-action adaptation of the world wide best selling book series by Eoin Colfer. This is a series that I have yet to read, but I know many of the books sit on the shelves of my 9 year old. Maybe now would be a good time to catch up since the book is always better than the movie, right?

STATUS: In Development

This debut novel by R.J. Palacio has been optioned by Lionsgate and the only other real info we have is that they have hired Jack Throne to adapt it. Now, I have not read this book yet but all I have heard about it is rave reviews and how it’s a must read for everyone. No matter your age!

Can I just ooh and aah over this trailer some more please? I mean seriously, this movie is going to be uh-maze-ing! Visit the IMDb page to check it out for yourself!!! EVen if you’ve already seen it, you know you want to again. Agelina Jolie was the best possible choice for the role – I’m stoked!!

The Alchemyst

STATUS: In Production

According to The Hollywood Reporter production on this adaptation started this month in Australia and New Zealand. We don’t have a cast yet – so my best guess is scouting filming sites and putting final touches on the script? Who knows, but if I could I’d fly off to one of those locations and try to find out for myself!!

STATUS: In Development

According to Catherine Fisher’s website she has signed a deal with AMBER Entertainments (no, I don’t own that company…) for a movie adaptation of Incarceron and Sapphique! No casting choices have been made and she encourages her fans to send them her way if you have them! Earlier, Incarceron was optioned by Fox and had Taylor Lautner set to play the lead, but later dropped the project.

STATUS: In Theaters October 3 2014

Based on Gillian Flynn’s Best Seller, this movie with Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike is bound to be amazing. This is one of the books I’m ashamed to admit I have not yet read, but definitely have to BEFORE the movie is out! Check out more about the movie on it’s IMDb page

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

STATUS: In Theaters October 10, 2014

Who didn’t love this book as a kid!? I know I loved it, and I read it to my kids. Now to see it brought to life with Jennifer Garner, Steve Carell and an amazing cast, is going to be epic! Check out more about this one on it’s IMDb page.

STATUS: In Development

This is a favorite series of mine, and I’m excited to see this world brought to the big screen! THR states that Jon Chu (G.I. Joe) replaces David Slade (Twilight Saga: Eclipse) as director. I think this is a good move – Slade always has a darker, creepier vibe to his movies and MATCHED is going to need more action in it. Also, it looks like Disney has their hands on this one – so we know that dress will be killer…right?

Did I miss anything? Have you heard any rumors about upcoming Books to Movies? Drop it in the comments!!

  1. Ron Howard + Graveyard Book= Very high hopes from me!

  2. There is Veronica Mars, which is really a t.v. to movie to book series.
