In this sequel to the bestselling fantasy thriller, Angelfall, the survivors of the angel apocalypse begin to scrape back together what's left of the modern world.
When a group of people capture Penryn's sister Paige, thinking she's a monster, the situation ends in a massacre. Paige disappears. Humans are terrified. Mom is heartbroken.
Penryn drives through the streets of San Francisco looking for Paige. Why are the streets so empty? Where is everybody? Her search leads her into the heart of the angels' secret plans where she catches a glimpse of their motivations, and learns the horrifying extent to which the angels are willing to go.
Meanwhile, Raffe hunts for his wings. Without them, he can't rejoin the angels, can't take his rightful place as one of their leaders. When faced with recapturing his wings or helping Penryn survive, which will he choose?

Warning, review contains some vague spoilers. Read at own risk.

I was one of the early readers of ANGELFALL, the first novel in what is (according to Goodreads) to be a 5 book series by Susan Ee. When I say early reader, I’m talking early enough that she wasn’t even with a publishing house when I read it, and when the book went from Self Published eBook to print through a publisher my review was even quoted in the ARC. So I have been holding out on this next book like…woah.

As did everyone else who has read ANGELFALL, I fell madly in love with the world that Susan Ee created. The take on angles that no one had dared touch before and of course the banter and relationship between Raffe and Penryn. So when I got word that WORLD AFTER would be coming out, finally, I waited with baited breath. Desperate for the next installment. I needed more of this amazing tale in my world and I needed it NOW!

I ripped into it, devoured each page, and page after page I became more and more disappointed. I never thought I would be the kind of person to say that the success of a book hinges solely on one character, but really if you think about that statement – what would Vampire Academy be with out Dimitri or The Fault In Our Stars with out Gus or The City of Bones with out Simon…take out one character and things kinda flop about like a fish out of water. So imagine my dismay when chapter after chapter…no Raffe. He’s mentioned. He’s seen, briefly through flashbacks. But, no funny chatter, no complicated relationship/non-relationship. Nothing. And this made the book far less enjoyable than then first.

Don’t get me wrong, Susan Ee’s world building continues to be exquisite, a flicker of hope for this novel as I read through. The characters development as time has progressed is undeniably great (Penryn’s mom, totally one of my favorites though her sister Paige is quickly catching up!) and the creatures that she has concocted are nothing short of terrifying. Sadly, even with all this, the book lagged, I knew what I wanted and I wasn’t getting it and I was angry.

Even the small snippets of flashbacks was not enough, because I wasn’t seeing him in all his Raffe-ness. What made it even worse, in what I am sure was the authors way of dangling him as the prize on the end of a stick, was the several times Penryn is actually near him and able to call out but doesn’t for one reason or another.

Over 3/4 of the way through the book when we finally get them in the same room, talking to each other the conversation felt wrong, bland and forced. Understanding that after what they have gone through, Raffe thinking she’s dead and she’s suddenly not – I mean that can take a toll on a friendship, still it just wasn’t organic even for two people struggling to cope and understand and figure out what’s next.

I will read book 3, though I do hope it doesn’t take 2 years for it to come out. I hope that there will be a bigger redeeming factor in 3 that will hook me back the way the first book had me.

  1. I totally agree with you. When I started reading World After I was so lost! So I hope the next book comes out faster than this one. Also, Raffe not being in the book as much broke my heart! He was the soul of the first book!!!! Great review!
