Do the gates keep the unchosen out or the chosen in?

In Mandrodage Meadows, life seems perfect. The members of this isolated suburban community have thrived under Pioneer, the charismatic leader who saved them from their sad, damaged lives. Lyla Hamilton and her parents are original members of the flock. They moved here following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, looking to escape the evil in the world. Now seventeen, Lyla knows certain facts are not to be questioned:

Pioneer is her leader.

Will is her Intended.

The end of the world is near.

Like Noah before him, Pioneer has been told of the imminent destruction of humanity. He says his chosen must arm themselves to fight off the unchosen people, who will surely seek refuge in the compound’s underground fortress–the Silo.

Lyla loves her family and friends, but given the choice, she prefers painting to target practice. And lately she’d rather think about a certain boy outside the compound than plan for married life in the Silo with Will. But with the end of days drawing near, she will have to pick up a gun, take a side, and let everyone know where she stands.

Forgive my poorly placed pun here, but Amy Christine Parker is pioneering a new trend in YA books. (Okay I know at least Amy laughed at that!)

GATED is told from the inside of a cult through the eyes of Lyla. You get to see everything from how it is she came to live at Mandrodage Meadows, why they stayed and honestly it became slightly difficult not to nod and agree along with a few things here and there. This is one of my favorite aspects of the book, because while cults seem so strange and far fetched, something we all know is there but I assume most of us have no first hand experience with,  Parker makes it her job to get you to sympathize with the community members. She doesn’t simply tell you a story, she puts you in it as if you too are right there sitting next to the community members while they hear the tales that Pioneer is spinning at meetings about the end of the world and the latest messages he has gotten from The Brethren.

What knocked me over was how simply Parker makes you see how it’s people, well educated and level headed people, can fall into these cults, how all different reasons bring them together forcing them to basically lose their common sense and subscribe, in this case the teaching of The Brethren. Simply put the world building in GATED is not only solid, it’s built on unbreakable ground.

GATED will show you life from the inside, as mentioned, but the kicker is Parker brings in the outside world as well. It’s not hard to believe since each of these groups get a reputation I the neighboring towns, people who are interested, curious and sometimes just nosey. It can be really bad if you’re the leader of a community like Pioneer is, when the curious party includes the local Sheriff.

Action packed and full of suspense – GATED is by far one of my favorite reads of this year! It’s new and fresh, a step away from everything that’s out there right now – a giant breath of fresh air. It will cause you to cheer, to cry a bit and to sit on the edge of your seat right until you turn that last page. My only gripe about this book is that it’s a stand alone. I can only hope and wait for whatever tale Amy Christine Parker tells us with her future books.
