Gilmore Girls meets Postcards from the Edge crossed with L.A. Candy!

Sixteen-year-old Annabelle Jacobs never asked to be famous, but as the daughter of Janie Jacobs, one of the biggest TV stars in the world, she is. Growing up is hard enough. Having to do it in public because your mother is a famous actress? Even harder. When your mom crashes and burns after her DUI mug shot is splashed across the internet? Definitely not fun. Then your mom falls for a guy so much younger than she that it would be more appropriate for you to be dating him? That’s just a train wreck waiting to happen.

From Robin Palmer, author of Geek Charming and Wicked Jealous, this is a novel about the most complicated relationship a girl ever has: that with her mother.

I almost didn’t read and review THE CORNER OF BITTER AND SWEET. I almost made a huge mistake because THE CORNER OF BITTER AND SWEET is an excellent book!

My reasoning for not reading it was the fact that from the description I got that there wasn’t any one aspect and given the summer time weather (and the simple fact I like at least a little romance in a book) I was wanting a fun summer romance type of book. Still, I decided I would give it a chance and I am so glad I did!

While THE CORNER OF BITTER AND SWEET didn’t have a huge love story element, there was enough to satisfy me and the other elements of the story were good enough that I didn’t care.

The first half of the book is all about Annabelle and her mom’s relationship. It’s a more serious story. Annabelle has been through a ton of crap thanks to her mom and it’s made her a little nutty herself. I mean the chick sniffs Play-Doh to calm herself down. (Side note: I did sniff some of my son’s Play-Doh to see if it worked for me. It didn’t). Throughout the book, Annabelle does a complete 180 and becomes this strong independent person (and eventually gives up the Play-Doh!).

I really loved Ben! I’ll admit I was hoping him and Janie would get together. He was a great father figure to Annabelle and offered her life some stability. It was obvious he really cared about her.

The second half of the story, Annabelle meets a guy (Matt) that is so nerdy and adorable he melted my heart a little. I loved him and it was great to see their relationship develop.

There were so many great characters in this book that it’s hard to mention them all. I loved Walter. He had to grow on me a little but after a little bit he totally won me over. He really helped Annabelle out when all of her (very crappy and superficial) friends let her down.

THE CORNER OF BITTER AND SWEET is a great story about family, friends, love, and hope. It’s a story about forgiveness and discovering who you are. It’s about learning to be independent and realizing that you have to hang on to the good people in your life. THE CORNER OF BITTER AND SWEET may have started off a little bitter but the ending? It was, oh, so sweet!
