Two people couldn’t be more opposite…

Kellen Peterson, the gorgeous star quarterback of the Griffin High football team, seems to have it all. Until the night of the Homecoming game, when Kellen gets tackled and suffers a traumatic brain injury – an injury that changes his life – including his ability to walk, talk and throw a football.

Ivy Ly is a senior and counting down the days until she can escape to college. Though her parents have big plans for her to be a doctor, Ivy is afraid to tell them she’d rather pursue music as a career.

Ivy’s best friend, Mira, is obsessed with Kellen. When Ivy is asked to tutor the injured football player upon his return to school, she thinks it’s the perfect opportunity for Mira to get to know him better – but sparks fly – in more ways than one…

GUEST POST

Defining moment during your youth when you realized you wanted to be a writer.

I actually didn’t start writing seriously until I was in my 40’s (so it’s never too late!) but I talked about being a writer when I was younger. In middle school and high school I was a voracious reader – I’d read three books a week, but as I entered college and then the workforce, I had less and less time and interest in reading.

When I finally seriously started writing there was very much a defining moment. It was about 2005 and everyone was talking about Harry Potter and I had no clue who this kid was. So, that summer my family and I were leaving on a driving vacation when I bought the first Harry Potter book and started reading. We reached our destination about four hours later but I wouldn’t get out of the car until I finished the Sorcerer’s Stone. I read the next three Harry Potter books that week. I LOVED them. I had forgotten what it was like to be swept away in a story so much that you became that character – to live in another world, to experience magic and innumerable other amazing things – it reminded me of everything I loved about reading. And, started a desire in me to write.

My daughter at the time was about nine. So I decided to write a story for her. What I learned, however, was that it wasn’t as easy to write a story as one might expect. I ended up taking classes, joining critique groups, practicing, practicing, practicing to learn the craft of writing. (I don’t think as a writer you’re ever done learning about craft.) What started out as a little project became an obsession. Complete and total madness! I LOVED writing – loved creating characters and weaving their lives together to create a story.

Though I work full-time, I write in the evenings and weekends. Now, I can’t imagine not writing and I expect, one way or the other, I will always be writing something. But without Harry Potter – who knows?
