Praise for Code of Silence: 'Deliberate, plausible, and gritty whodunit.' --Booklist Starred

A detour through the park leads Cooper, Gordy, Hiro, and Lunk straight into a trap, and
Gordy is abducted! For the kidnapper, it's all a game, a way to settle an old score, with
no one getting hurt. But evil has a way of escalating, and once his identity is discovered,
the rules change. Despite the best of police efforts, the hours tick by without a clue or
a ransom call, leaving everyone to their own fears. Gordy is gone. Cooper descends
deeper into a living nightmare, imagining the worst for his best friend and cousin. Hours
stretch into days, and talks of a memorial service begin to surface. But Cooper still feels
his cousin is alive and develops a reckless plan, changing all the rules. Now the one
who set out to rescue his friend needs to be rescued himself. Sometimes rescuing a
friend from darkness means going in after them.

Paris or Venice
I’d have to go with Venice. I love being around water, and I think it would be really interesting
to see a city where people walk out their front door and take a boat to work.

Deodorant or Perfume
I’m a deodorant guy. I like using a razor, so the shaving cream has all the cologne I’d ever want.
Not to say I don’t appreciate perfume. I love it—when my wife is wearing it.

Winter or Summer
I’d have to go with summer. There’s just so much I like to do in the summer that can’t be done in
winter. Boating. Driving my old pickup truck to some spot to write. And if it happens to be a fast
food place with outdoor tables—even better. Sip, snack, write. Repeat.
But I wouldn’t want summer all year long. I really like living in a spot where we have four
distinct seasons. I like the bite of cold on my cheeks when I walk, and I actually like shoveling

Vampire Diaries or Twilight
Okay, this one is hard to say because I’ve never read either. I used to watch all the old black
& white monster movies when I was a kid. Vampires were always creepy to me—definitely not
romantic. They were pasty-faced stalkers who slept in caskets. Vampires were to be avoided at
all costs. Maybe that’s why I never read Vampire Diaries or Twilight.

Angels or Demons
I’d prefer angels, thank you very much. And I believe both angels and demons are very close and
very real—but we often aren’t aware of them.

Fall or Spring
Fall. I love the colors. The cool, crisp nights. I love throwing on blue jeans, a light jacket, and
writing outside. I love the crunch of leaves when I walk and I even like raking. Spring is a little
too soggy for me.

Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter
Lord of the Rings. I love the whole story. The deeper truths of it. Like how the things we desire
can be the very things that destroy us. Lord of the Rings is in a class all its own. And in a world
where so many stories are about a hero on a quest to find something, I love how Lord of the
Rings is about Frodo on a quest to get rid of something.

Ice Cream or Sorbet
Ice Cream!! So rich. Creamy. So many flavors. I love ice cream.

Coke or Pepsi
Definitely Coke. I like it cold, but not with so much ice that it gets watered down. My wife and
I often go out on a date to a restaurant that has one of those new soft drink machines with
something like a hundred flavors. One of the Coke options is Cherry Vanilla Coke. Lately that’s
been a favorite—and it sings with a burger and fries.

Cabin in the woods or Condo on the Beach
I like a cabin better than a condo, but the beach trumps the woods. Actually, a cabin on
the beach would be the perfect solution. I love the mesmerizing quality of the surf. The
waves breaking and thundering on the shore. The foam hissing its way up the beach. I love
beachcombing. I love the sound of the gulls screeching and wheeling overhead. And the idea of
going to a cabin after an evening walk on the beach—and stretching out by the fireplace with a
good book sounds just about ideal!

Kisses or Hugs
No contest here—if you’re talking about which I prefer with my wife. Kisses—and lots of them.
Don’t get me wrong, hugs are great, but they’re just leading up to kisses, in my opinion. Hugs
are actually very useful. They get you in a great position to kiss.

Cash or Card
Card. I generally don’t even carry cash with me. I do it all with a credit card.

Print or Ebook
Definitely print. I like the feel of a book in my hand. The heft of it. I like turning pages rather
than scrolling. I like underlining and highlighting some books—or making notes in the margins.
I like dog-earring the pages at times. I know—that’s terrible, right? Other times I like dropping
a bookmark between pages. A physical bookmark—like a key card from some hotel my wife and
I visited. Or a ticket stub to an event that I totally enjoyed. Or maybe a photo that brings back
great memories. I like looking at the cover once in awhile as I’m reading with just a turn of my
Here’s another thing I love about print... the ability to see what other people are reading. When I
notice someone reading on a plane, in a restaurant, a park, or wherever, I like to see the cover of
the book. Sometimes it opens a great conversation with them that I would have missed otherwise.

Voice or Text
Well, I prefer voice. Actually talking to someone—or at least leaving a voicemail message. But
on the practical side, I’ve learned I often connect with someone quicker by shooting them a little
text message.

Batman or Superman
Easy. Superman. I grew up watching the old black & white TV series. I have a Superman
lunchbox in my office. A hunk of Kryptonite rock (at least that’s what I call it) on my desk. I love
the Superman story—and the life-lessons gained from them.

Wheat or White
I know, I know. I should say wheat. It’s the healthy choice. But the truth is, I prefer white. I like
taking a fresh slice of white bread and holding it up to my face—drawing in the scent. Now that’s good. Wheat can’t compete. And just look at the difference with wheat and white bread when it
comes to making toast. Slathered with chunky strawberry jam or buttered and sprinkled with a
manly layer of cinnamon sugar—Mmmmmm-good. White bread makes better French Toast, too.
Way better. Even with a lot of syrup, French Toast made from wheat bread doesn’t come close.

Romance or Passion
They go hand-in-hand—and I aim for both. I think the strongest passion is born out of true
romance. It’s a building thing. If I just push for passion, I’ll probably miss romance. If I work at
romance, I’ll get both.

Night or Day
Night. Most of the time I love the nights. Look forward to them. Often the events of the day are
just building up to my plans for that night.
