Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away.

Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact and continue their lives apparently unchanged. Most of humanity has succumbed.

When Melanie, one of the few remaining "wild" humans is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Wanderer probes Melanie's thoughts, hoping to discover the whereabouts of the remaining human resistance. Instead, Melanie fills Wanderer's mind with visions of the man Melanie loves—Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she has been tasked with exposing. When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love.

Although this book has now been out for 4 1/2 years, I had to take it upon myself with the movie coming out soon to read this all over again to rediscover why I ended up loving it!  And love it all over again?  I did.

In this completely different tale from Stephenie Meyer, we get to encounter something not so normal. Okay, so with her other series it’s something “not normal”, but this was a departure that seemed almost realistic in so many ways that it constantly made me think during the book.  Melanie Stryder, who’s also “Wanderer” throughout the story, is a vastly creative and sometimes misinterpreted character.  She’s human…she’s alien…she’s two souls in one body?  I guess that’s the best way to put it.  The thing is, Melanie isn’t like many host bodies that just give up and let a soul take over – that’s where it all begins to get interesting.

The biggest character I came to hate in this story (maybe aside from Kyle) was The Seeker.  Maybe if I knew more inner workings to her mind, then I would understand her in a new way – but Stephenie did such a great job of making her evil that it was hard to find any reason to like or enjoy her.  What threw me for a loop were characters like Ian and Jared – and oh how you will all come to wonder who you’re rooting for and…maybe even why you’re rooting for either!  But aside from those two wonderfully delicious (did I say delicious?) men, I came to fall in love with Jamie, Melanie’s brother.  There are so many pieces of him in this entire story that give you a more innocent approach to what’s happening to planet earth.

Truly questioning throughout this book is a huge part of the reason to love it.  It raises questions like ‘what would I do if I were thrown into something like this?’, ‘Who would stick by me if anything happened?’, ‘Would I disappear if a soul used my body as a host?’  What’s completely insane to me from reading this is that I started questioning how close I was to certain friends and family members – so much so at times that I actually had to remind myself “it’s just a book!”

Maybe I swayed you to try reading this book now after a few years, maybe I didn’t…but I know now you’re at least a little bit curious.  I’ll admit, the book does start off slowly and you’ll get the “ok wait, when does it move more fluidly” but trust me, after backstory hulabaloo, and getting to really know The Seeker in a way, and Melanie/Wanderer – it’s beyond words incredible!
