Ever since it was built by the great magician Abracadabra, the hotel Tyler Yu lives in has had its share of mysterious events. Ghosts wandering the halls, a magician who vanishes into thin air – Ty can’t figure these things out on his own. But Charlie Hitchcock, with his photographic memory, might just be the partner the school bully needs. Together, they’ll solve magical mysteries beyond your wildest imagination

Okay THIS was a really fun read! First, I read it with my 8 year old who fought me tooth and nail for “just one more chapter” each night. Second, it was a great step into reviewing Middle Grade Books. When you spend most of your time buried in the angsty teen world of YA, well let’s just say I was a little worried I wouldn't connect with the book. I was wrong!!! I connected and enjoyed as much, if not more than the 8 year old!

In HOCUS PUCUS HOTEL you will find no shortage of mystery and magic – you see because Abracadabra Hotel, known to the kids in the book as Hocus Pocus Hotel, was built by a magician for magician’s. You won’t just be wondering how the mystery is solved but how the tricks are done as well. The constants intrigue will really keep kids interested, and hey – even adults!!

Oh did I forget to mention that the hotel has way more going on than just the magicians? Yes, try a possibly haunting and creepy voices! It’s, as my 8 year old put it “Just the right amount of scary and fun”. The 8 year old also really loved all the magnificent illustrations! She reads at a 8th grade level (for those keeping track, that’s 5 grades ahead of the one she is in) so I thought maybe it might make her

feel like it was “too young” for her, but she commented time and again with things like “Ohhh! That’s so cool!”. The pictures are really a wonderful asset to the book and I love that there are so many!

We have one more book review coming up this month from author Michael Dahl, I have no trouble saying that I think my family has found yet another favorite author to add to our shelves!! we look forward to the second installment of HOCUS PUCUS HOTEL out next year!!
