The Protector #2
Author: MR MErrick
Rating: 5 Birds
Devastated by the loss of his mother, Chase is trying to balance the life he’s been left with, a family he’s still getting to know, and power he never thought he’d have. He doesn’t understand why the Goddess has named him the Protector and granted him two gifts: the Mark, a tattoo that now covers his back, and the ring. But between getting interrogated by the Circle and psychic attacks from Riley, the Mark is the least of his concern. There’s a demon inside Rayna that’s fighting to be released, and it’s not her inner witch. It’s something else–a monster threatening to tear her apart.
As Chase struggles to control his magic, his enemies are closing in. Everyone has staked a claim on his ring, and destroying it may be his only chance to stop Riley. But Chase must decide if stopping him is worth risking the lives of everyone he cares about, or if protecting the ring will be enough to save his world
MR Merrick doesn’t fail to keep you entertained with edge-of-your-seat action, (and a lot of it!) an ever growing cast of characters who bring color and intrigue to every page. And a beautifully created world that feels so real, you will be paying extra close attention to the world around you from now on, wondering what you’re seeing is actually real – or a glamour.
Merrick really shines in writing this fairly large cast of characters and keeping them each separate in their person and yet meld together with the story perfectly. I have found, in books with a large cast that sometimes they can blend together, one getting lost into another or forgotten about all together. Not the case here. Each character is a shining star of their own.
Of these, shining stars in the book Rayna is by far my favorite! She was a stand out character for me in EXILED as well, but she’s really more of a main focus in SHIFT and I loved it. I loved her snarky wit, I loved her struggles and pain and I miss her already now that I have finished the book. (Don’t worry, that’s not a spoiler..she’s not dead, I just miss her…because I finished the…oh you get it, what am I still explaining for!?)
Our villain, Chase’s dad Riley, is better than well written in my opinion, and really keeps this book and it’s plot solid because of this. Merrick really knows and lives as his characters and you can see it and feel it when you read his work.
All in all, Merrick delivers in what I have to say is one of the best written self published series I have ever read. If you don’t already own them, get to it! DOn’t be left behind, you need to read these books.
