Why I Love to Write Fantasy

When you see the word ‘fantasy,’ do you think of werewolves and vampires or princesses and castles? These days, most people think of Twilight when they hear ‘fantasy.’ Not me. I’m still stuck in the old school definition of magic, royalty, and long journeys. Epic fantasy, not urban fantasy.
People often wonder why I’m so enamored with epic fantasy. I grew up on a farm that my family has owned for more than one hundred years, so maybe it’s my love of history. My great-grandmother emigrated from Ireland and told me stories about her homeland until she died when I was four, so it’s my need for stories set in a land steeped with myth. I’m a natural redhead, like all good fantasy heroines, so maybe that’s why.
But...I have an older brother and sister. Both grew up on the farm. Both listened to my great-grandma’s stories. Both are natural redheads.

Both are also accountants. There goes that theory.
I have no idea why fantasy is my favorite genre. I do know that the first story I ever wrote, at the ripe age of seven, was about unicorns. The Last Unicorn was one of my favorite movies. I lived and breathed Labyrinth.

I told my high school guidance counselor that I wanted to study medieval history and she told me there was no such major. I laughed the day I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in medieval history. Whether that was an attempt to steer me away from a useless degree or her ignorance of what was out there in the world, I don’t know.

I’m just glad I never gave up on the pursuit of the thing I love most.
So, to Spook and Dani, who both asked me this question, I guess I have to say, “I don’t know why I love to write fantasy. It’s just some intangible part of who I am as a person.”
