A story set in 19th century China and centered on the lifelong friendship between two girls who develop their own secret code as a way to contend with the rigid cultural norms imposed on women.

A copy of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan was gifted to the MMSAI team from Fox Home Entertainment. To be honest, until I read deeper into the premise behind the movie and the New York Times bestselling novel it was based on of the same name, written by Lisa See, I may not have normally picked up this movie at my local Red Box or Netflix. But I am ever grateful for being presented with this amazing story because I was really pulled into the plot and very much enjoyed the movie! Watching these two stores, one for each of the girls who has been isolated by their families and kept away from their “sworn sisters” or Laotong they are forced to communicate through a secret language they write on a fan. It’s inspirational and heart breaking at times. Definitely something to sit down and watch with your girlfriends!! Have a girls night out of it!!

I haven’t yet had the time to read the novel, which was also gifted to us by Fox Home Entertainment but it’s an understatement to say I am now chomping at the bit to do so. If the movie was this good then the book must be even better – isn’t that they way it always works?

As part of the promotion for Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Fox Home Ent. also sent me 3 copies of the novel and asked me to share 2 of them with a few of my life long friends. After all, this movie is all about true friendship and maintaining it even over long distances. While the girlfriends I shared the novels with don’t really live a great distance from me, we are all moms with busy lives and spread out across the metro area and it can be hard to get together outside of our book club or midnight movie premier outings, meaning we on average only see each other once a month. For us, keeping our friendship strong includes not just the book club, but phone calls, facebook twitter, and sharing many  of the same interests, one being the shared love of reading and blogging.

Every one has at least one great friend that they have to really work at keeping a friendship with for any number of reasons, for fun ideas on How to Stay Friends Forever, check out out post about it courtesy of Fox Home Entertainment.

Let’s Discuss:

How do you stay close with your friends, be they far away or near by?
